MPs supporting the Climate and Nature Bill in Parliament

Roz Savage MP will propose her recently published Climate and Nature Bill tomorrow, Friday 24 January. The bill was published on Wednesday 22 January and can be read here: Climate and Nature Bill - Parliamentary Bills - UK Parliament

Roz is calling for MPs from across the house to vote for the bill. Numerous MPs expressing their belief that climate and nature policies should be guided by science and personal ethics, not party politics.

With the UK Government under increasing scrutiny for its perceived lack of ambitious action on climate change, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the campaigners are urging MPs to demonstrate leadership.

According to polling carried by Yonder for Zero Hour last month, 58% of voters believe Labour's environmental policies lack ambition when compared to the previous Conservative government, while 67% call for science to guide policy decisions.

It’s vital that MPs have the freedom to vote according to their consciences on the Climate and Nature Bill,” said Roz Savage MP. “This is not a time for political gamesmanship. The stakes are too high. The public demand action, and MPs must be free to act in the best interests of future generations.

According to The Environment Journal, the Government’s current stance, which has been criticised for being no more “nature-positive” than its predecessor, has faced mounting pressure ahead of the bill’s second reading. Public opinion is increasingly vocal, with 72% of voters demanding a fair net-zero transition that both protects UK jobs and addresses climate change.

The public's concerns are also mirrored in global politics, with 60% of Britons viewing Donald Trump’s potential re-election as a significant threat to climate action, and 57% believing that the UK must take stronger action in response.

Climate and Nature Bill Summary:

  • The Bill has been drafted by world leading climate scientists, ecologists and conservationists—and would lock the science into law—as part of delivering an integrated plan to tackle the intertwined climate and nature crises.
  • The Bill would create a joined-up strategy for the UK to tackle the interconnected climate and nature crises together—and is the only proposed or actual piece of legislation to connect the UK’s responses to climate change and nature loss. We cannot solve one without tackling the other. And we risk making each crisis worse if they’re tackled in silos.
  • The CAN Bill would lock commitments that the UK have already agreed to internationally into national legislation—the cut emissions in line with the Paris Agreement and to restore nature by 2030 (as outlined in the Global Biodiversity Framework).
  • The Bill is a science-led ‘umbrella framework’ centred around three key pillars: climate, nature and people
  • Climate: The Bill would reduce the UK’s overall contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions in line with the most urgent ambition from the Paris Agreement.
