On Saturday 11th January, Roz Savage MP officially opened the Malmesbury Pharmacy and Travel Clinic, celebrating the vital role it plays in the local community while addressing significant challenges faced by community pharmacists.

Invited by Superintendent Pharmacist Gurinder Singh, Roz Savage joined Mr Singh, Mayor Phil Exton, GP partners from the local medical practice, and colleagues from the NHS Integrated Health Board for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. This marked the formal opening of the pharmacy, which has quickly become an essential resource for residents in Malmesbury.

Speaking of the event, Roz praised the dedication of Superintendent Pharmacist, Gurinder Singh and his wife and the Director of Malmesbury Pharmacy, Raj Purewel, highlighting their commitment to providing healthcare services under increasing pressure:

“Gurinder and his wife, Raj are incredibly dedicated to serving the people of Malmesbury. In just a few short months, they have built really strong relationships and deep trust with their customers, filling a vital role as our NHS struggles. However, it is taking a toll - they work really long hours, taking precious time away from their young daughters, and they face an uncertain future with National Insurance changes and the terms of their contract. I will be speaking up in Westminster for the Singhs and for all community pharmacists, asking the government to give more support to these essential and valued medical professionals.”

Raj Purewel has also commented:

“It was so lovely to see the community come together and celebrate the offical opening of our pharmacy in Malmesbury. From the police to local staff from the care home to lecturers from university of Bath and senior leadership team from BSW ICB. Pharmacies are integral to our local communities. The most accessible healthcare professional and we are so grateful for the support given to us from our patients. We not only have patients coming to us from Malmesbury but all surrounding villages and we look forward to continuing to meet all healthcare needs over the coming months and years.”

During the visit, Mr Singh also shared his concerns about the upcoming changes to salaries and National Insurance contributions, which could impact the pharmacy's ability to operate seven days a week until 9pm.

This visit is part of Roz Savage's ongoing engagement with local and independent pharmacies across the South Cotswolds, underlining their importance in providing accessible healthcare to communities.
